Oppression on Women in Somalia
Since Somalia is without a stable government, the women are not protected from their human rights that they deserve. They have been put through poverty, abuse, discrimination, rape, and murder. The women are viewed as only for child-bearing and for doing tasks around the house. The country is in a troubled state, and the wealth and technology isn't there for everyone to flourish in this country. Certain groups take over and oppression can happen, leading to unfair treatment. While other conflicts are not helping the cause to get this problem fixed; oppression on women is still a concerning issue in Somalia.
The ecosystem is Somalia is mostly a very hot and humid desert. This causes droughts, famines, sickness. If food and water are both very hard to come by already, then that's only going to increase tensions and conflicts. How does this effect women? Men are the dominant, They tend to get their needs satisfied first, which includes food and water, and even claiming shelter. While the women can grow hungry, thirsty, and even getting sick from the hot climate and lack of nutrients. The ecosystem does not help the women, since the men get their needs first over the women.
The government is also another problem that contributes to this. In recent years, the government has been very unstable with other conflicts. This is allowing other groups, such as extreme religious and tribal, to take over parts of Somalia with their own laws. This does not help the women either, since the main Somalian government cannot create and enforce laws and rights. In a lot of these groups eyes, women are just seen for child-bearing and labor. Leading most women to get treated extremely poorly. http://www.wluml.org/node/5707 (Story about a Woman getting stoned to death). With this unstable government, proper laws and rights cannot get established and enforced, so women are getting effected by the government and its conflicts.
While the economy in Somalia appears to be helping the country with its small range of exports/imports trading, it appears that there isn't enough resources going around to help everyone. Once again, the dominant males and groups in the country fight for and take the resources; leaving the women little to survive on. Since it's already hard for the people to afford healthcare, there isn't enough to go around, and a lot of women suffer from the poor treatment from the dominants; the women once again do not get the resources they need to survive. Making them sick and dead. “The most
dangerous thing a woman in Somalia can do is to become pregnant,” said
Qasim, a former doctor . “When a woman becomes pregnant her life is
50:50 because there is no antenatal care at all …. there are no
hospitals, no healthcare, nothing.” (Batha, Trust.org). The economy doesn't do much to help the women either, effecting them poorly.
With an unstable government, not too flourishing of an economy, and the hot, grueling ecosystem, the women get treated very poorly and are constantly oppressed from other extreme religious and tribal groups and mostly men.
